Hello, my name is Mony :) Stuff I reblog includes: art, animation, cartoons, Hey Arnold, Michael Jackson, Homestuck, Mexico stuff, sociology type stuff, social issues, pro-choice, women's rights, lgbt rights, anti-war, race issues, etc.
I also have an art only tumblr, check the Navigation/Links section to the right of this by scrolling over it!
I feel really annoyed when any discussion of American (US) history of the poor treatment of POCs completely never mentions Mexicans/Mexican-Americans/Amerindian-Mexicans or whatever combination thereof you use to describe us. What the hell do you mean only X or only Y were driven from their lands, or enslaved, or had their governments overthrown or otherwise outright beaten and murdered.
Did…did you miss some things in history or do you just not know?
It’s just particularly striking and disorienting to see people mention virtually every single race/ethnicity/what have you in American History but be completely silent on Mexicans, on Mexican History, on everything as if it wasn’t even a moment in history at all, and we’re not even “dead” history. we’re. just.not. there.
That to me is really weird. It’s not “It’s in the past” narratives like black americans get, it’s not “mythical/dead/extinct” bs that Native American tribes get, it’s not the model minority narrative asians get + “oh we were terrified of them immigrating for awhile there!” There is no White narrative on mexicans besides “illegal and lazy” and there’s also no POC narrative either.
It’s radio silence. Dead airwaves. Nothing. And this frightens me doubly when I realize the places that DO bother to teach this stuff are being banned from teaching it, Tucson Unified is no longer allowed to teach Chicano history, so how the hell is anyone supposed to know we did anything? How can anyone learn? The history is banned completely. It doesn’t exist. All you get today is a narrative about how mexican and latin@ immigrants are crossing the border illegally to steal jobs. You don’t even get why, beyond “Oh, well they’re poor and want money.”
And this worries me because things overlap! You can be black and latin@/chicano/mexican and you can be Native American and hell, you can even be Asian and Mexican and the history is densely intertwined and how are people going to KNOW that if you don’t tell them?
